What to find in the Amazonia?
Yasuní National Park
Yasuní National Park is an Ecuadorian national park that extends over an area of 9820 square kilometers in the provinces of Orellana and Pastaza, between the Napo River and the Curaray River in the middle of the Amazon basin about 250 kilometers southeast of Quito.4 The park, which is primarily jungle, was designated by UNESCO in 1989 as a biosphere reserve and is part of the ground where the Huaorani people are set. Two Huaorani factions, the Tagaeri and Taromenane, are uncontacted groups.
It is located in the sub-basins of the Tiputini, Yasuní, Nashiño, Cononaco and Curaray rivers, tributaries of the Napo River, which flows into the Amazon. The park is shaped like a horseshoe and extends from the southern Napo River and northern Curaray River to the middle basin of the Tivacuno River.5 According to a recent study6 , Yasuní National Park and its underlying expanded zone are considered the most biodiverse area on the planet because of its richness in amphibians, birds, mammals and plants. This park has more animal species per hectare than all of Europe combined.
Cuyabeno Fauna Production Reserve
The Cuyabeno Fauna Production Reserve is located in the Province of Sucumbíos, in the northeastern Amazon Region of Ecuador. It is a place of great biodiversity, home to one of the largest concentrations of wildlife, both flora and fauna. A complex system of rainforest formations, 13 lagoons, rivers and a tropical rainforest make the 603,000 hectares a record for the highest levels of biodiversity in the world.
The Cuyabeno has more than 550 different species of birds; 60 species of orchids; more than 350 species of fish; a prodigious variety of reptiles such as anacondas, caimans and turtles. There are over 12,000 plant species are found within the reserve. Also, many species of mammals, including the incredible Tapir. The Reserve is also home to rare species, such as the mythical pink river dolphin, the Hoatzin or eagle of the region, with its 8-foot wing span.
Podocarpus National Park
Podocarpus National Park is a national park located in the provinces of Loja and Zamora, in southeastern Ecuador. It was established on December 15, 1982. The park is a megadiversity zone and an area of high endemism due to its location between diverse biological systems.
It extends over 146,280 km²; in the two foothills of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes to the basins of the Nangaritza, Numbala and Loyola rivers. About 85% of the park is in Zamora province and about 15% in Loja province.
