ITINERARY DESCRIPTION
DAY 1: Baltra Airport - Highlands on Santa Cruz Island
The plane lands at the Baltra Island airport, where they will be received by the staff who will help with the bags and the journey from the airport to the hotel. Then you take a bus to the Itabaca Canal, located between Baltra and Santa Cruz Islands; then you take a ferry that sails to Santa Cruz Island. Once on the island, the vehicle is taken to make the first visit to Los Gemelos, which were air chambers and secondary lava that later collapsed over time. Later transfer to Rancho el Manzanillo to observe the giant tortoises in their natural state, also visit the Lava Tunnels whose formation is the product of volcanic eruptions of hundreds of thousands of years; to enjoy this beautiful site you walk internally. Lunch at the ranch* and transfer to the lodging located in Puerto Ayora.
DAY 2: Full Day Bartholomew + Sullivan Bay
Between 6:30 am and 7:30 am the vehicle picks you up at the hotel door, to cross the island from south to north until you reach the Itabaca Canal, where we board the boat. You navigate for approximately 2 hours, during which time the guides give orientation and safety talks. Entering Bartolomé the waters become clearer turquoise, revealing the sandy bottom with scattered rocks. The boat goes to its anchorage place, and then, in the company of the guide, go down to Bartolomé Island.
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF BARTOLOME
- Bartolomé is a volcanic islet off the east coast of Santiago Island. The island offers some of the most beautiful landscapes in the archipelago.
- It has a volcanic cone that is easy to climb and offers great views of the other islands. The Pinnacle Rock is the distinctive feature of this island, and the most representative monument of the Galapagos.
- The 360 degree view from the highest part of Bartolomé Island is truly spectacular. The highest part that is visited on this island is approximately 115 meters above sea level, the tour is done along a 795-meter path of steps (360+ steps) and that has one of the most spectacular views and landscapes.
- Spectacular views of the Galapagos Islands, where you have a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding islands and on a clear day even of others further away such as Marchena and La Pinta.
- From the highest part and towards the east you can see cones of the spatter type, formed by drops of thick lava. These cones are known as Parasite Cones since they were not formed by action of the main event. To the west we find tuff cones (formed from sedimented volcanic ash) and eroded remains.
- The most representative Pinnacle of the Galapagos Islands and especially of this Island is a tuff cone. The main attraction of La Isla Bartolomé is the geological interpretation of the formation of the Galapagos Islands that can occur on this site. In the visiting area there are two beaches and they are linked by a path. On the south beach you can take walks with the possibility of observing rays and blue sharks (endemic Galapagos shark) from the shore, so activities such as swimming or snorkelling are prohibited on this beach.
- In contrast to the south beach, on the north beach you can do surface diving (snorkelling), during most of the year the sea is very calm which helps to carry out activities such as swimming.
At certain times of the year you can easily see everything from pangas to some penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus) fishing near the beach. There is a small colony of penguins on this island that nest in the bay.
