Origin of Galapagos

The Galapagos Islands are located in the American continent, whose subcontinent is South America, currently in the country of Ecuador, located exactly 972 kilometers from the coast of the country.

The islands were formed about more than 5 million years ago, as a consequence of tectonic activity. It has over nine active volcanoes, which have recorded 70 eruptions approximately since 1800.
The Galapagos Islands, known as the “Enchanted Islands”, were declared a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978. It offers dazzling landscapes, white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, and a fascinating environment for wildlife watching.
Guayaquil to Galapagos
The most common way to reach the islands is by plane from the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Foreign tourists pay U$S 100, but those coming from MERCOSUR countries or under 12 years of age, half (U$S 50). Both fees are paid in cash (more information is available at the Galapagos Ecological Airport page).
If our chosen destination was Baltra airport (a small island separated from the north coast of Santa Cruz Island by the Itabaca Channel), we will have two options.
1) In case you are staying in Puerto Ayora (main city of Santa Cruz), you’ll have to take a free bus (labeled “Canal”) that will take you to the ferry to cross the canal (the ferry costs less than a dollar). Once across the canal, to get to Puerto Ayora you can opt for a bus (costs US$ 2 and takes about 40 minutes) or a cab (between US$ 15 and U$S 20).
2) But if you are going to visit the islands on a cruise, you will have to choose the bus labeled “pier” on the island of Baltra, from where the boat you have hired will depart.
